check engine light diagnostics

While it may be the last thing you want to deal with, a check engine signal is not something to put off. Delaying repairs can lead to bigger and more expensive problems.

An illuminated check engine light is an indication that an emission-related failure has occurred with your vehicle. Symptoms may include decreased gas mileage, misfires, shaking, loss of power, etc. A car diagnostic check by Auto Tech To Go can identify a problem regardless of the difficulty.

Drive with peace of mind at Auto Tech To Go in central New Jersey.

Diagnosing a check engine light can be difficult and time consuming. Our ASE-certified technicians can assure you that you will be satisfied with the outcome. We will make sure to test the necessary components and give our customers and shop owners a detailed report explaining our decision.

My Check Engine Light Is Flashing, What Now?

A flashing check engine light may indicate a type-A misfire or what is commonly known as a “dead misfire”. This type of misfire can allow unburned fuel to enter the exhaust. Once the unburned fuel enters the exhaust, the converter can overheat causing premature failure or possible meltdown.

Some vehicle manufactures have a fuel cut strategy to prevent fuel from entering the exhaust during a misfire. Cutting fuel does not take effect instantly, the PCM will typically need to identify a number of misfires before this can occur. So unfortunately this strategy is not bullet proof.

Our technicians will take things a step further when identifying the cause of a misfire. We can use oscilloscopes to check secondary ignition or injector pulse. There is also a tool called a pressure transducer that allows us to see compression and valve movement by measuring the pressure changes inside the cylinder.

So, if you have a check engine light and you’re not sure if it’s safe to drive, then give Auto Tech To Go a call. We will be happy to provide you with all the details and related diagnostic information.

So, what’s the right answer?

At Auto Tech to Go we believe you should never ignore your check engine light regardless if its flashing or not. An illuminated check engine or service engine soon light means your vehicle isn’t operating the way it should be and servicing is required. So to prevent your vehicle from further damage, it may be wise to have a professional check it out.

Can you still drive your car?

This depends on the root cause of the problem and if it can lead to other issues. Any vehicle with a misfire regardless of the severity should not be driven for long. The same goes for a valve timing concern. Timing components that break while driving can cause total engine failure on an interference engine. An interference engine is when one or more valves in the fully open position extends into any area through which the piston may travel.

If the problem turns out to be an evaporative system leak, then it will depend on the severity of the amount of fuel vapors leaking from the evap system. A small leak of fuel vapors won’t affect drivability but passing motor vehicle inspection might be a problem. The worst case scenario is an evap fault code with fuel leaking. This poses a threat to not only the driver but to others around them. But how would you know the severity of the evap leak?
